Western Chic Invite
My sister asked me to design the invite for her 30th birthday party. She was conflicted between a “tying up my twenties” bow theme and western, so we combined them into a Western Chic theme.
The final result turn out to be adorable, but it took me quite a few variations to get to it. I broke down my process below.
Mood Board
First Go
I tried to incorporate all the elements in her mood board in my first few options, and I also tried to keep the social media size1080 x 1920 px. I liked where I was going with these designs, but ultimately, there was too much going on. I was using images, graphics, and illustrations in the same design and it looked quite discombobulated.
Rope / Bows / Denim variations
The 30 lassoing the “twenties” was my favorite concept, but I couldn’t find the right lasso and 30 rope letter to match. Instead of taking the time to figure that out, I came up with the second version with alternative rope ties that were easily available in Canva elements. These designs had layers on layers: first denim, then paper, then paisley with a stitch and bows border, and rope elements on top. They’re cute but with 2D and 3D and images it was all too much.
Dark Denim / Horseshoe / Tie variations
I was playing around and created these design options. I HATED the way the image of the horseshoe looked on the image of denim with the image of tie (second design), so I had to prove to myself that I could make it look better with the cartoon version. Neither were girly enough for what we were going for, but could be fun for a more traditional western themed party.
The Final
I knew I had a simpler chic-er design in me that took the best of all the previous designs, keeping the girly theme top of mind. Bandana print is so western and also very cute, so I explored the Canva elements and found this premade-border. The iPhone sizing went out-the-door!
Here is the final result:
I was able to incorporate all 2D elements (with the exception of the cowboy hat) giving it a flatter design, much easier on the eyes.
I will be making some other party materials. I know she wants to incorporate more pink, so I came up with a few ideas that I may use for menus, signage, etc.
